Veterans Supply Drive
York Community Helps Homeless Veterans
Winter 2020
In the spirit of the holiday season, employees and customers of Thornton Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, donated much-needed supplies to Mr. Sandy’s Homeless Veteran’s Shelter.
Wayne Hawkesworth, general manager of Thornton CDJR, made the donation to Shawn, a representative of Mr. Sandy’s. Among the items donated were kitchen cleaning supplies, clothing, toiletries, and laundry detergent.
About Mr. Sandy’s Homeless Veteran’s Shelter
The shelter was named in honor of Sandy Walker, a Vietnam Veteran who opened a Veteran’s Thrift Store to help homeless vets in 2006. Known “Mr. Sandy” to all, Mr. Walker unfortunately lost his battle with cancer in 2015. His legacy was continued by his daughter, Sandie, who opened the shelter later that year.
The facility can accommodate up to 15 veterans at a time. Its purpose is to provide temporary overnight accommodations, while it puts them in touch with local organizations for a more permanent solution to their housing problems, his daughter stated in a local media report.
